You may have missed it this morning, but today, August 26, is National Dog Day (in the USA). This day, according to the definition, is the day when we reflect on all dogs in shelters which urgently need to find a new golden basket, but also on all those dogs that daily put their life in jeopardy to save people from bombs, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, etc. And of course, our own hairy friends.
National Dog Day is an initiative of Colleen Paige, who began to organize this day in 2004. Paige has more national days created, as national puppy day, cat day and Mutt Day.
The American organization makes clear they are against against puppy mills, against bans on certain breeds (a dog must not be a victim of human misconduct) etc, and supports also foster purebred dogs, provided you try to find them in shelters.
Dog Day is separate from the Dutch Dog Day, the initiative of the Raad van Beheer (Dutch Kennel club), to be held in May each year.
But whatever.. , it is always a good idea to pamper your canine companion, and have a moment to reflect on all those other dogs that often have less easy lives. In short, have a great Dog Day.
